KRG PM takes electoral grievance to supreme court

KRG Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government has officially lodged a complaint against the Independent High Election Commission (IHEC) at the Federal Supreme Court, accusing the commission of breaching the Iraqi constitution.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani urged the Federal Supreme Court to promptly halt the parliamentary elections and suspend all actions of the Independent High Election Commission until a resolution is reached regarding the concerns raised in the complaint.

In the filed complaint, it was stated that the commission’s decision to split the Kurdistan Region into “four electoral constituencies based on voter numbers rather than population figures violated Article 49 of the Iraqi Constitution and previous Federal Court rulings.”

The complaint highlighted that the division strategy overlooks the constitutional requirement to consider the fair representation of all communities within the region, emphasizing the importance of balanced representation, particularly for the Turkmen and Christian communities.

This legal move follows criticisms from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), branding the court as the “Green Court” and calling for the dismissal of Judge Abdulrahman Zebari, who represented the KDP’s stance within the court.
