Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani emphasized that discussions on Kurdistan elections were not on the agenda during recent meetings in Iran. Speaking on the visit, Barzani stated, “Our visit to Iran signals the initiation of a new phase in our relations, promising positive beginnings.”

Barzani acknowledged the existence of commonalities and challenges in their relations with Iran, asserting a firm commitment to addressing these issues.

“While we share important commonalities with Iran, we also acknowledge existing problems that require resolution. There is a strong determination to tackle these challenges,” he stated.

Regarding the election schedule, Barzani clarified, “We solely discussed the timing of the Kurdistan Region elections, without altering the established date.” Dismissing rumors of any date changes, he reaffirmed the commitment to a mutually agreed-upon election timeline.

Highlighting the importance of unity among political parties, Barzani stressed, “Elections should not be a source of division but rather a platform for consensus among all parties involved.” He emphasized the necessity of conducting elections that garner widespread support across the political spectrum.

In terms of regional security, Barzani emphasized Kurdistan Region’s dedication to maintaining stability and ensuring that it does not pose a threat to neighboring nations. He reiterated the need for restraint, stating, “No armed forces from the Kurdistan Region should enter Iranian territory, and military actions should be avoided.”

Barzani also acknowledged Iran’s constructive role in urging Kurdistan Region and Iraq to address their issues through cooperation and friendly dialogue. “Iranian officials have encouraged collaborative efforts to resolve our shared challenges, and we are committed to engaging as friends to find solutions,” he concluded.
