PUK challenges postponement of parliamentary elections in federal court

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has taken its dissatisfaction with the delay in Kurdistan parliamentary elections to the Federal Court of Iraq.

Channel8 reported that Shalaw Kosrat Rasool, a member of the Political Bureau of PUK, lodged a complaint stating that the prime minister’s appeal to delay the elections goes against Article 19 of the Iraqi Election Commission Law No. 31 of 2019. The article specifies that decisions made by the Council of Commissioners in electoral matters are final and cannot be appealed elsewhere except before the Electoral Judiciary.

Shalaw Kosrat Rasool, representing the PUK, stated, “Suspending the work of the commission at this sensitive time, when there is very little time left for election day, the commission and election contracts, including the printing of voting forms and voting equipment program contracts, will cause millions of dollars wasted, and it will create confusion for the work of the commission.”

This action comes in response to Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s request to postpone the elections, a move that has sparked controversy and legal challenges.

Underlining the urgency of the situation, the PUK demands that electoral matters must be resolved solely by the Electoral Judiciary.
