The Syrian Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection raised the price of bread bundles in line with the recent wage hikes and the increased cost of diesel for bakeries.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday authorized a 50% salary increase for civil servants, military members, and retirees in the public sector, amidst a deteriorating economy and soaring inflation following nearly 13 years of conflict.

The price of the 1100-gram bread bundle soared to 400 Syrian pounds, doubling from its previous rate of 200 Syrian pounds, in both public and private bakeries.

The ministry justified the increase in prices, citing unprecedented costs in securing the bread daily, which now exceed 7000 Syrian pounds per bundle.

According to the ministry, the price of one liter of diesel for both public and private bakeries surged from 700 to 2000 Syrian pounds.
