Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly said on Tuesday that Canada has imposed sanctions on 11 individuals holding senior positions within Hamas or its affiliates,

These individuals, including Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, military leader Muhammed Deif, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s military leader Akram al-Ajouri, were involved in the planning, financing and execution of terrorist attacks against Israel on October 7, according to a statement released by Global Affairs Canada.

“Canada unequivocally condemns Hamas’s terrorist attack against Israel, its unacceptable treatment of hostages and its heinous use of sexual and gender-based violence as a tactic of war,” Joly said.

She said that this “demonstrates our commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”

The sanctions aim to curb Hamas’s ability to fund further attacks and support international efforts to sanction the group.

The move comes two weeks after Britain and the United States unveiled new coordinated asset freezes and travel bans on the militants.
