Sulaymaniyah Governor Haval Abubakr said on Sunday there are no new developments on Turkey’s ban against the city’s international airport and slammed the sanction as unjust and unfair.

Turkey has blocked flights from Turkish Airlines to Sulaymaniyah International Airport since April 2023 amid concerns over what the Turkish government has described as “increased activities” of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Sulaymaniyah province. The suspension of flights to Sulaymaniyah airport has been repeatedly extended.

Abubakr told a news conference on Sunday that the administration is prepared for provincial council elections and all changes involved in the handover of Sulaymaniyah’s governorship.

The governor also touched on teachers’ strikes in the province, saying educators and employees have the right to protest but he hoped the education process would not be delayed again under any circumstances. He thanked those teachers who have returned to the classroom.

The education process in Sulaymaniyah province has been suspended for nearly four months due to the teachers’ boycott.
