Qubad Talabani, deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan Region’s caretaker government, says some obstacles to forming the region’s tenth cabinet have been resolved, although negotiations between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) remain ongoing.
Speaking at a press conference attended by a Channel8 reporter, Talabani said there was an intention to form the next government, but some obstacles remained. He did not specify which issues had been resolved or what disagreements were still outstanding.
Talabani’s remarks come nearly two years after the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections on October 20, 2024. Despite more than 20 meetings and efforts to establish a shared vision for governance, the PUK and KDP have yet to reach a final agreement, with the distribution of government positions among the reported points of disagreement.
The Kurdistan Region’s parliament held its sixth-term election on October 20, 2024. The vote was followed by negotiations among political parties over the formation of a new regional government, with the PUK and KDP at the center of the process.
The Kurdistan Region’s tenth cabinet is expected to succeed the caretaker government. The length of the negotiations and disagreements over the allocation of positions have delayed the formation process.
