FYI

The meeting in Erbil between Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and German Ambassador Daniel Krebber coincides with a major transition following the official conclusion of the U.S.-led international coalition's military mission against ISIS on September 30, 2026.

Pursuant to bilateral timelines established with Baghdad, Coalition forces, including Germany, have completed their formal troop drawdowns and handed over their respective facilities at Erbil Air Base.

The German Federal Ministry of Defence confirmed the return of its final advisory personnel, noting that Iraqi and Kurdish security entities are now fully capable of independently countering remaining insurgent cells.

In official remarks concerning the historic drawdown, Deputy Prime Minister Talabani extended deep gratitude for the coalition's decade of security support while emphasizing that local authorities must now take full responsibility for regional stability.

While its combat mission has ended, Germany has clarified that the military departure does not signify an end to its regional partnership.

Instead, Berlin is maintaining an adapted framework of civilian stabilization, institutional development, and security support coordinated directly through its diplomatic missions.

To anchor this evolving relationship, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and German Ambassador Krebber also stressed the critical necessity of expanding bilateral ties across multiple sectors.

Consequently, the Kurdistan Regional Government is aggressively prioritizing structural, pro-business reforms to ensure the Region remains a highly secure and accommodating hub for incoming German investors.
