  • Another court session for the trial of Lahur Jangi and other defendants was held at today morning.

The Slemani Criminal Court Two held a judicial hearing lasting over two hours to review legal evidence and confessions in last year's Lalezar case.

According to reporters from Channel8, the court delivered its final judicial rulings on last year's Lalezar case, handing down individual prison terms for each of the primary defendants:

  • Lahur Jangi was sentenced to five years and three months in prison.

  • Polad Jangi was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

  • Rebwar Hami Haji Ghali was sentenced to two years in prison.

  • Rebwar Qudrat was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

  • Peshawa Hassan was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

  • Renwar Zryan was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

  • Aras Hama Ali was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.

  • Sarbast Mina Hama was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.

Furthermore, following the extensive review, the court issued a formal decision to acquit and release two detainees, identified as Omar Shekha, a driver, and Kaiwan Muhammad, a gardener.

Speaking at a press conference, Dana Taqiadin, the lawyer for the Lalezar detainees, announced that the legal team will initiate the official appeal process this coming Sunday against the court's verdicts.

Taqiadin characterized the judicial decision as "political," noting that the public prosecutor had favored sentencing the detainees despite the fact that all defendants denied the charges during the proceedings.

He added that the total time the individuals have already spent in pre-trial detention will be fully calculated and deducted from their final prison terms.

FYI

The trial was originally scheduled for October 1 but was postponed due to a public holiday, before resuming for a subsequent session on October 8.

During that hearing, several defendants entered confessions regarding their charges, prompting the presiding judge to adjourn the proceedings until October 15 to facilitate a deeper review of the evidence.

Lahur Jangi and his associates face prosecution under Article 56 of the Iraqi Penal Code, a legal provision that applies to individuals accused of organizing criminal groups or ordering offenses without directly participating in the physical acts.

The judicial session focused on recording formal statements from the accused and reviewing all submitted evidentiary materials.
