Lahur Sheikh Jangi Arrested After Nearly Three Hours of Clashes Between Security Forces and Lalezar Fighters
Lahur Sheikh Jangi and dozens of fighters were arrested early Friday morning in Sulaymaniyah after nearly three hours of clashes with security forces at the Lalezar Hotel.
Security forces began implementing the court order at 3:30 a.m., bringing Lalezar under control by 6:30 a.m. According to Channel8, they had asked Jangi to surrender more than 10 times, but he refused.
Footage obtained by Channel8 showed security forces transferring the leader from the hotel after his arrest. His wife and children are confirmed to be safe.
The arrest order was issued by the Asayish Investigation Court under Article 56 of the Iraqi Penal Code. Regarding the warrant, a Sulaymaniyah Court spokesman told Channel8 that if the accused is aware of it, he must surrender immediately.
Speaking to Channel8, lawyer Shaswar Sheikh Ata explained that if the suspect resists security forces during arrest, the punishment could be very severe and may even reach the death penalty.
The incident drew reactions from officials in the Kurdistan Region. Sulaymaniyah Governor Haval Abubakr called on all parties to help end the situation and resolve conflicts through legal means. “Fighting and clashes don’t solve any problems; they only complicate issues and delay solutions,” he added.
Meanwhile, Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, said he is working with all parties “to end these tensions and prevent bloodshed and violence.”
He emphasized that clashes threaten the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region. “Everyone should be patient and stop these clashes immediately. The youth of this country should not become victims, and any problems or disputes should be resolved through legal means,” Barzani emphasized.
According to the Kurdistan Region Security Agency, the Lalezar incident stemmed from information that Lahur Sheikh Jangi's militia group, the Scorpion Force, with the support of Azhi Ameen, who supplied drones and armed militias, plotted to carry out a coup involving assassinations and drone attacks. The agency stated that the Lalezar group sought to destabilize the region by targeting senior Kurdish officials, including PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, as well as several government and security figures.
The Kurdistan Region Security Agency released video confessions from members of the Lalezar group, in which they admitted to planning to carry out assassination plots and attacks on government institutions across Sulaymaniyah and Halabja provinces, as well as the Garmian and Raparin independent administrations.
The Sulaymaniyah Appeal Court had instructed Lahur Sheikh Jangi to formally surrender through legal procedures and in a civilized manner, but he refused. Consequently, security forces acted under the court's order.
