The Independent Human Rights Commission in the Kurdistan Region visited Sulaymaniyah to meet with Lahur Sheikh Jangi and confirmed that he was in “good health” and had not been subjected to any violence, forced confessions, or mistreatment during interrogation.

According to a statement from the commission on Tuesday, the visit was carried out on the recommendation of the Head of the Commission, Muna Yako. They met with Lahur Sheikh Jangi at Kani Goma Prison and discussed his health, accommodation, and procedures.

“He is in good health and is being kept in a private room with all necessities provided. He has also spoken to his family via video,” the statement said, adding that he had requested books from Asayish, which were provided to him.

When asked about videotaping during the investigation, he confirmed that no cameras or recording equipment were used.

The Independent Human Rights Commission said that Lahur Sheikh Jangi requested that his case proceed through legal channels and that the commission monitor the process. The commission also emphasized his right to meet with his lawyers, which it expects will be resolved soon.

Lahur Sheikh Jangi also “informed representatives from the United States, Britain, France, and the Kurdistan Regional Government that these events would happen.”

Following the meeting with Lahur Sheikh Jangi, the team met with some detainees who were members of his forces. According to the delegation’s investigation, their number was 162.

The statement confirmed, per the Asayish report, that five people died on both sides during the clashes. Some relatives were allowed daily visits, and detainees were handed over to security forces in good condition without facing any violence.

After security forces began executing the court order, Lahur Sheikh Jangi was arrested on 22 August along with several others following clashes at Sulaymaniyah’s Lalezar Hotel. The arrest order was issued by the Asayish Investigation Court under Article 56 of the Iraqi Penal Code.

Following nearly three hours of confrontations, 48 fighters surrendered to security forces, who entered Lalezar and arrested Jangi and his brother, Polad Sheikh Jangi, who was wounded in the leg. Rebwar Hami Haji Ghali, head of the Scorpion Force, along with the rest of their forces, also surrendered.

According to the Kurdistan Region Security Agency, the Lalezar incident stemmed from information that Lahur Sheikh Jangi's militia group, the Scorpion Force, with the support of Azhi Ameen, who supplied drones and armed militias, plotted to carry out a coup involving assassinations and drone attacks. The agency stated that the Lalezar group sought to destabilize the region by targeting senior Kurdish officials, including PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, as well as several government and security figures.

The Kurdistan Region Security Agency released video confessions from members of the Lalezar group, in which they admitted to planning to carry out assassination plots and attacks on government institutions across Sulaymaniyah and Halabja provinces, as well as the Garmian and Raparin independent administrations.

The Sulaymaniyah Appeal Court had instructed Lahur Sheikh Jangi to formally surrender through legal procedures and in a civilized manner, but he refused. Consequently, security forces acted under the court's order.
