Turkey’s Interior Ministry has dismissed three mayors from the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) following their detention in Mersin and Istanbul.
The three Mersin mayors were detained a day earlier and will remain in custody pending their trials. The latest measures follow the removal of the mayors of Istanbul’s Eyüpsultan and Ataşehir districts from their duties earlier this week.
Security forces also carried out raids at municipalities in Esenyurt in Istanbul and Cesme in Izmir on Wednesday. Nearly 20 municipal officials and employees were arrested during the operations.
The developments come amid a broader series of investigations and arrests involving municipalities governed by the CHP, Turkey’s main opposition party.
The CHP controls several major municipalities across Turkey, including Istanbul and Mersin. The party has faced increased legal and administrative pressure following major electoral gains in the 2024 local elections.
The removal of elected mayors allows Turkey’s Interior Ministry to appoint acting officials to run the affected municipalities while judicial proceedings continue.
