Ousted Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel announced Tuesday that he will launch a new political faction to form the "largest opposition party" in parliament.

Addressing lawmakers in parliament, Ozel announced, "We are forming our new party tomorrow, taking its first step alongside lawmakers elected and entrusted by the nation."

Ozel was removed from the CHP chairmanship in May 2026 after an Ankara court nullified his 2023 election victory over voting irregularities, temporarily reinstating his predecessor Kemal Kilicdaroglu. 

While Ozel and his supporters challenged the ruling as politically motivated, he officially exited the party on July 21, following ongoing internal disputes and a standoff at the party headquarters.

Ozel Vows New Faction Will Form Turkey's Largest Opposition Bloc 

"With this new establishment, we will become the largest opposition party in the Grand National Assembly by a wide margin," Ozel told lawmakers. 

Ozel emphasized that his new faction maintains its commitment to leading the parliamentary opposition while actively preparing to contest and secure governance of the country.

"We left the building, but we took the legacy with us. The authority and the mandate are with us," he stressed. 

Upcoming Party Launch ‘a New Beginning’ for Turkey 

He expressed optimism regarding this political transition, characterizing the upcoming party launch as "a new beginning" for the public.

The ousted leader emphasized that the new party represents a continuation of their political movement rather than a departure from its original goals.

"This is not a separation or a surrender," he underlined.
