Two informed sources told Sharq al-Awsat that the armed groups linked to the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” will abstain from participating in Tehran’s retaliation following the bombing of its consulate in Damascus within Iraq. However, a possible planned attack in the Golan may be looming, pending an Iranian decision.

According to a Shiite source speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat on condition of anonymity, “the factions aligned with Iran have agreed not to reignite hostilities with the Americans,” mentioning a “concluded agreement” among their leaders amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.

The source emphasized, “Extensive discussions between Iraqi faction leaders and Iranian authorities have resulted in an understanding to maintain peace in Iraq and refrain from targeting U.S. bases.”

A second source elaborated that, “Following talks with key politicians post the consulate attack, faction leaders have reached a consensus to exclude Erbil as a potential Iranian retaliation target.” Clarifying further, the source stated, “The consensus was definite not to attack Erbil, as it would sideline Masoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, from the political landscape.” He added, “Targeting Erbil in any Iranian retaliation would complicate matters, especially during this critical time concerning the U.S.”

Both sources hinted at the possibility of retaliatory strikes against Israel outside Iraq, with one source pinpointing the Golan as a probable target. “An appropriate response is expected, bearing a cost that all resistance factions in the region, including Iraqi groups, can withstand,” the source elaborated.

Yesterday, the group claimed responsibility for carrying out 13 attacks on sites in the “occupied territories,” including the Ramat David and Tel Nof bases, Ashkelon port, as well as airports in Eilat and Haifa.
