Bomb attached to car explodes in Damascus

A bomb that was planted in a car exploded in the al-Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus on Saturday, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said.

It was unclear who was behind the blast or who was targeted.

The explosion occurred in Huda Square and was heard in the al-Mazzeh area, a source in the Damascus police said.

Occasionally Damascus witnesses security incidents in which explosions target civilian or military vehicles.

The blast occurred in the al-Mazzeh neighborhood, where the Iranian embassy and other embassies are located.

It comes as tension in the Middle East escalated after Iran threatened to retaliate against Israel following an attack blamed on Israel against its embassy annex on April 1, when at least seven Iranian officials were killed, including two senior members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iran and Syria have blamed Israel but Tel Aviv has not commented.

Israel warned on Saturday that Iran will suffer the “consequences” of escalating the conflict after Tehran announced it had seized a ship linked to Israel in the Gulf.
