Kurdish Journalism Day celebrated with emphasis on press freedom, ethical responsibility

"Kurdistan" was the first Kurdish newspaper. It was first published on April 22, 1898 in Cairo

Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Region, extended warm congratulations to all journalists, commemorating the 126th anniversary of the first issue of “Kurdistan” newspaper by Mir Miqdad Badrkhan, as well as the 26th anniversary of the establishment of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate.

President Barzani emphasized the significance of fostering a supportive environment for media professionals.

He stressed the necessity of ensuring journalists’ access to information sources without any discrimination, restrictions, or censorship. This, he noted, enables journalists to fulfill their duties effectively in monitoring institutions, raising public awareness, and contributing to the advancement of democracy and societal progress.

Affirming his unwavering support for journalists and the principle of press freedom, President Barzani urged journalists to adhere to ethical standards and the laws governing journalism. He encouraged them to actively promote social harmony, political stability, and prioritize the interests of the people and the nation.

Acknowledging the vital role played by both local and international organizations in monitoring press freedom and freedom of expression in the Kurdistan Region, President Barzani emphasized the importance of handling journalism-related cases in accordance with established laws governing journalism.

President Barzani paid tribute to the memory of journalists who sacrificed their lives for their profession, as well as those who dedicated themselves to upholding truth and advancing Kurdistan’s journalism, both in times of struggle and in today’s era of freedom.
