KRI President set for Iran visit with a focus on security and elections

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani is set to travel to Iran on Sunday as part of an official visit organized by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The trip, which includes several high-ranking officials from the Kurdish government, will center on discussions around completing a security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad that includes the armed forces of East Kurdistan, encompassing the Kurdistan Region.

Two Sources within the Kurdistan Region presidency aware of the trip told Channel8 that the primary focus of the visit will be the upcoming sixth session of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.

This comes amid pressure from Barzani’s party to delay the elections, a matter likely to be discussed during the visit.

Nazim Dabagh, the representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Tehran affirmed that Iran has pledged to treat the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections as an internal affair, assuring that there will be no external interference.
