Iraq's Prime Minister Condemns Israeli Strike on Hezbollah Leader as Reckless Crime
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Saturday condemned the Israeli killing of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, labeling it a "crime" and a "shameful attack."
The Hezbollah leader was killed on Friday in a strike targeting the group's stronghold in southern Beirut. Al-Sudani referred to Nasrallah as "a martyr on the path of the righteous," adding, "In a new heinous act of aggression, the Zionist entity has crossed all red lines." He emphasized that Nasrallah had followed in the footsteps of previous martyrs who fought against "the oppressive occupation."
Al-Sudani asserted that the attack in Dahieh, Beirut, reflected "a reckless desire to expand the conflict at the expense of the region's security and stability." He stressed that the ongoing struggles, including "the just Palestinian cause" and Lebanon's confrontation with Israeli aggression, would ultimately result in the people's victory.
He called on international organizations, the United Nations Security Council, and regional powers to "take decisive action" to prevent further aggression and to halt the "ethnic genocide of the Palestinian people" that has escalated since last October. He also noted that recent attacks have led to the deaths of hundreds of innocent Lebanese, asking whose interests such violence truly serves.
Reaffirming Iraq's position, Al-Sudani expressed Iraq's support for both the Palestinian and Lebanese people, grounded in international legitimacy, humanitarian principles, and the moral obligation to defend those standing against oppression.
The statement concluded with a tribute: "Allah's mercy and peace upon the martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. Glory and honor to all the martyrs of Lebanon, Palestine, and the righteous confrontation against aggression and oppression."
