Syrian military and their Iran-backed allies abruptly withdrew from the eastern city of Deir Ez Zor and the surrounding area on Friday after the government was dealt a number of devastating blows by an opposition force's advance.

Deir Ez Zor province, an oil-rich region bordering Iraq, is split between Kurdish forces to the east of the Euphrates and Iran-backed Syrian government forces and their proxies to the west.
