French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned the West on Monday against being naive about the new authorities in Syria following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad.

He also reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting Kurdish fighters in their battle against extremist groups.

“We must regard the regime change in Syria without naivety,” Macron said during a speech to French ambassadors. He emphasized that France would not abandon “freedom fighters, like the Kurds,” who continue to play a vital role in combating extremism in the region.
