Nearly two months after the election of former Lebanese Army Commander Joseph Aoun as the country’s president, the Lebanese government announced on Thursday the appointment of Rodolphe Haikal as the new Army Commander.

The decision follows weeks of intense negotiations over this crucial security position, traditionally reserved for a Maronite Christian officer. Haikal's appointment comes at a critical time for Lebanon, which continues to grapple with political instability, economic hardship, and security challenges.

Who is Rodolphe Haikal?

A native of Aqtanit, a village in the Sidon District, Haikal previously served as the Director of Operations in the Lebanese Army. Over the years, he has held several key military positions, gaining extensive experience in security and defense affairs.

His leadership skills and operational expertise were widely recognized in 2023 when he visited UNIFIL forces in southern Lebanon, strengthening military coordination with international peacekeepers.

Facing Complex Challenges

Haikal assumes command at a time of mounting security concerns. One of his primary responsibilities is overseeing the implementation of the November 27 ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel. The agreement requires:

-The withdrawal of all weapons from southern Lebanon.

-The dismantling of Hezbollah positions and centers.

-The disarmament of other armed factions in the region.

Beyond regional security, Haikal must also address internal stability, particularly as Lebanon’s economic crisis continues to worsen. The sharp decline in the Lebanese pound against the U.S. dollar has significantly impacted military salaries, placing immense pressure on soldiers and officers.

Additionally, Haikal is responsible for border security, particularly along the Lebanese-Syrian border, where ongoing developments in Syria pose further challenges to national security.
