Iraq Congratulates Pope Leo XIV, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Interfaith Cooperation

Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani extended their congratulations to Pope Leo XIV following his election as Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, praising his commitment to peace and global coexistence.

In a statement posted on the X platform, President Rashid wrote:

“My sincere congratulations and blessings to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on the occasion of his election... We wish him success in championing peace and strengthening the values of peaceful coexistence among the peoples of the world.”

He also expressed Iraq’s pride in its close relations with the Vatican and affirmed Baghdad's desire to deepen cooperation in pursuit of global stability and the rejection of war.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani echoed the sentiment, writing:

“We ask God Almighty to grant His Holiness success in his honorable mission and to continue the Vatican's path as a beacon of peace, love, and interfaith harmony.”

Both leaders reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to religious dialogue, moral values, and humanitarian cooperation with the Holy See.
