Lynne Tracy, the US ambassador to Moscow, paid a visit to a memorial to opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Sunday.

“Today at the Solovetsky Stone, we mourn the death of Alexei Navalny and other victims of political repression in Russia,” the US embassy in Moscow said on social media.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Alexei Navalny’s family, colleagues, and supporters. His strength is an inspiring example. We honor his memory,” it said.

Human rights groups say authorities have detained more than 400 people at gatherings for Navalny, who died in prison on Friday.

The Solevetsky Stone and the Wall of Grief, both monuments to Soviet-era political repression, have become makeshift memorials to Navalny.

His death after three years in prison has ignited strong criticism from western nations and grief from his supporters.

The European Union said on Friday that it holds Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible for imprisoned leader Navalny’s death.

“Alexei Navalny fought for the values of freedom and democracy. For his ideals, he made the ultimate sacrifice,” European Council President Charles Michel posted on X.

The opposition leader was viewed by many as the best hope for change after years of increasing state oppression and perceived corruption.
