Thousands gathered as Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was laid to rest in Moscow on Friday.

Ivan Zhdanov, an aid to Navalny, posted a message to Telegram noting his coffin was placed in the ground to the soundtrack of the film “Terminator.”

A crowd gathered near the cemetery and shouted a series of slogans against the Kremlin and its offensive in Ukraine.

“No to war!” the crowd yelled, along with “Down with the power of murderers!” and “We will not forgive!” as many of Navalny’s supporters blame Russian President Vladimir Putin for the death of his top critic.

The 47-year-old opposition leader died in an Arctic prison last week after spending more than three years behind bars, prompting outrage and condemnation from Western leaders and his supporters.

Navalny was Russia’s most prominent opposition leader and garnered a huge following as he campaigned against corruption under Putin.

The European Union said last week it holds Putin responsible for Navalny’s death.

Navalny had attempted to run for president in 2018 and led a number of investigations into Putin’s wealth and inner circle.

He survived a previous poisoning attempt and received treatment in Germany. Navalny was immediately imprisoned on return to Russia.

State media last week reported Navalny’s death. No cause of death was revealed and the prison authorities said they attempted to resuscitate him.
