Hundreds of protestors took to the streets in rebel-held northwest Syria on Friday following the death of a man in police custody.

The region under the rule of al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), comprising about half of Idlib province and parts of Aleppo, Latakia and Hama provinces, was hit by demonstrations after a man allegedly died under torture.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said a rebel fighter was killed under torture on February 23 after he was in HTS custody for eight months.

Human rights groups have accused HTS of torture, sexual violence and enforced disappearances.

Demonstrators gathered near the clock tower in the town of Idlib and in other cities and villages, including Binnish, Marea, Killi and al-Atarib.
