Turkish Army Withdraws from Kani Masi Villages, Residents Barred from Returning
The Turkish army has begun withdrawing from the villages of Miska and Darlage in the Kani Masi area of Amedi town, but villagers have been informed they will not be allowed to return home.
According to Channel8, the Turkish forces withdrew from these villages late Saturday night without providing a reason for their departure.
An anonymous source from Kani Masi stated that there had been no prior indication of the Turkish army's intention to withdraw until Friday.
Adib Majid, the mayor of Miska village in the Kani Masi district of Duhok province, confirmed the withdrawal to Channel8. However, he also noted that the families who had fled the villages are still prohibited from returning by the Turkish forces.
The withdrawal coincided with ongoing clashes between the Turkish army and PKK fighters in the nearby village of Shilaza, which resulted in a prolonged fire in the area.
The villages of Miska and Darlage, located around Kani Masi in Amedi township in northeastern Duhok province, were once home to 165 families, predominantly Christians. Currently, fewer than three families remain in these villages.
