USS Abraham Lincoln Rushes to Middle East as U.S. Prepares for Potential Iranian Retaliation
In a decisive move, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln and its accompanying carrier strike group to expedite their journey to the Middle East.
This acceleration comes as the United States braces for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran in response to a high-profile assassination in Tehran.
The Department of Defense announced the deployments on Sunday, August 11, following a strategic discussion between Austin and his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant. Additionally, the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia has been dispatched to the U.S. Central Command area of operations.
While the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group was already scheduled for deployment to the region, Austin’s directive specifically aims to "accelerate its transit to the Central Command area of responsibility." This comes in the wake of Israel’s assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, an act for which Iran has vowed retribution.
In tandem with its ongoing military operations in Gaza, Israel has been actively targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon. Over the past two weeks, Israeli forces have eliminated Hamas official Samer al-Hajj in southern Lebanon and a top Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, in Beirut. Amidst these developments, the U.S. and its Middle Eastern allies are pushing for negotiations between Israel and Hamas, yet the Pentagon is preparing for an Iranian counterattack.
The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is set to bolster the already deployed USS Theodore Roosevelt Strike Group, which has been in the Middle East since earlier this summer. Initially, the Lincoln was meant to replace the Roosevelt, but now it will serve to "add to the capabilities already provided by the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group."
The timeline for the USS Abraham Lincoln’s arrival in the Middle East remains uncertain. The carrier was last reported in the Pacific Ocean, participating in joint drills with the Italian Navy’s Cavour Carrier Strike Group. The Department of Defense has not disclosed how much faster the strike group’s transit will be.
This strike group includes Carrier Wing 9, which features one squadron of Marine Corps F-35Cs and three Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet squadrons, among other aircraft.
In a related development, approximately a dozen U.S. Air Force F-22 fighter jets were deployed to the Middle East this past week, arriving from their base at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska.
The USS Georgia, which is already in the Mediterranean Sea, has been conducting training operations with special forces and Force Reconnaissance Marines for about a week, according to the U.S. Navy.
Earlier this year, in April, the Pentagon participated in a multinational operation that intercepted over 300 missiles and one-way attack drones launched by Iran and its allies towards Israel. This was in retaliation for an Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic facility in Damascus, Syria. The operation involved U.S. Navy and Air Force assets, as well as Army units stationed in Iraq.
