With $41.5 million, "Alien: Romulus" takes the number one spot at the box office
At the North American box office, the newest addition of the 45-year-old saga, "Alien: Romulus," debuted at the top spot.
3,885 theaters playing it in the US and Canada, the 20th Century Studios release made an estimated $41.5 million in its opening weekend.
The worldwide launch of "Alien: Romulus" was $108.2 million, which included $66.7 million from 49 foreign territories. With $29 million, Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" continued to hold into second place, securing the top spot on the rankings. The Walt Disney Co., which owns 20th Century Studios, took home the top two spots.
Hits like "Inside Out 2" and "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" contributed to the studio's 42% share of the summer box office take.
The film industry tends to slow down—or, to put it more bluntly, dump its trash—during the month of August. Even though 2024 has been a disappointing year for the film industry as a whole, a number of recent hits, such as "Deadpool & Wolverine" and "It Ends With Us," have helped create momentum, and this late August weekend was 30% better than the same weekend last year. Plus, it's a 10% increase from August 2019.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, stated, "The summer started off pretty gloomy, but it's winding up really strong." "We expected to coast through August, but now we're tearing through it, and we're going to have a substantially better summer total revenue than we anticipated."

"Alien: Romulus," directed by Fede Álvarez and set during the events of "Alien" and "Aliens," featured a group of promising young actors in their twenties, including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Isabela Merced. The science fiction picture takes advantage of Álvarez's affinity for horror, as he is famous for "Evil Dead" and "Don't Breathe," and fully embraces the horror origins of the franchise.
The 81% popularity rating it has received on Rotten Tomatoes, mostly were positive reviews. CinemaScore rated it a B+.
