Hashim Safi Al Din, born in 1964 in Deir Qanoun En Nahr, southern Lebanon, is a prominent Lebanese Shia cleric and a senior official within Hezbollah.

He comes from a respected Shia family and is a maternal cousin of Hezbollah’s former Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah.

Often regarded as the second-in-command of the organization, Safi Al Din also has a significant family connection through his brother, Abdallah Safi Al Din, who serves as Hezbollah's representative to Iran.

Safi Al Din received his religious education in Najaf, Iraq, and Qum, Iran, where he studied alongside Nasrallah. In 1994, he returned to Lebanon, quickly ascending through Hezbollah's ranks.

By 1995, he joined the Majlis Al Shura, Hezbollah’s highest decision-making body, and soon after was appointed head of the Jihad Council, gaining considerable influence over the group's military and strategic operations.

As the head of Hezbollah’s Executive Council, Safi Al Din is responsible for overseeing the organization's political, social, and educational programs, playing a major role in shaping Hezbollah's non-military activities.

He is one of the top three leaders of Hezbollah, alongside Hassan Nasrallah and Naim Qassem, and has been seen as a possible successor to Nasrallah since 2006, reportedly with support from Iran.

In addition to his political responsibilities, Safi Al Din is one of six clerics serving on Hezbollah’s Shura Council, the group’s supreme advisory body.

He was appointed head of the Executive Council in 2001 and has also played a key role in Hezbollah's military operations, having been named military commander of Southern Lebanon in 2010—an area crucial in the group's conflict with Israel.

Safi Al Din's prominence has not gone unnoticed internationally. In 2017, the U.S. Department of State designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist for his involvement in Hezbollah’s operations, including planning attacks on Israeli and Western targets.

In June 2020, Safi Al Din's influence grew further when his son, Sayyed Reza Hashim Safi Al Din, married Zeinab Soleimani, the daughter of Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of Iran's Quds Force. This marriage strengthened ties between Hezbollah’s leadership and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
