Estonia will maintain its current overseas military commitments in 2025 but plans to significantly reduce its largest deployment in Iraq.

The Riigikogu's National Defense Committee met on Monday to draft bills concerning Estonia's international military missions, confirming participation in seven different UN, EU, and NATO operations next year.

Currently, up to 110 Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) personnel are deployed in Iraq under the U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), but this number will be nearly halved to 63 by 2025.

The OIR mission aims to advise and support Iraqi security forces in developing a self-sufficient defense system capable of defeating extremist groups and maintaining peace and stability.

The Estonian troops are primarily stationed at Harir Air Base in the Erbil Governorate, located in the Kurdistan Region of northeastern Iraq.
