X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has introduced a new AI image generator named Aurora to its chatbot Grok. The announcement was made on Saturday.

Aurora boasts the ability to create more realistic images compared to Grok's earlier two image generators. X had initially introduced image generation to Grok in October last year.

According to TechCrunch, Aurora is accessible to all X users, just like Grok. The tool can generate images of public figures and even copyrighted characters, including figures like Mickey Mouse. Users can access Aurora via the Grok button on the X app, both on mobile and web platforms.

How Does It Perform?

While Aurora shows promise, it hasn’t been without its flaws. Users have shared images generated by the tool that feature unusual blending of objects or distortions, such as people missing fingers. (To be fair, accurate hand depiction remains a common challenge for AI image models.)

The launch of Aurora coincides with X making Grok available to all users for free, removing its previous exclusivity for premium subscribers.

It remains unclear whether xAI, Elon Musk’s AI startup responsible for Grok and several AI features on X, played a direct role in training Aurora. However, xAI employees announced the launch of Aurora in multiple posts on X on Saturday.
