On This Day in History: Mark Zuckerberg Launches Facebook, Paving the Way for a Social Media Revolution - February 4, 2004
On February 4, 2004, Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg, along with co-founders Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, launched "TheFacebook" from his dormitory room.
Initially designed as an exclusive online directory for Harvard students, the platform allowed users to create profiles, upload photos, and connect with peers. Within 24 hours, approximately 1,200 to 1,500 students had registered, indicating a strong demand for such a service.
The rapid success at Harvard prompted the team to expand access to other Ivy League institutions, including Columbia, Stanford, and Yale, in March 2004. By the end of that year, membership had extended to most universities in the United States and Canada, amassing over one million users.
In 2005, the company acquired the domain "facebook.com" for $200,000 and rebranded as "Facebook," dropping the "The" from its original name. The platform continued to evolve, introducing features such as photo tagging and the News Feed, which became central to user engagement. In 2006, Facebook opened its registration to anyone aged 13 and older with a valid email address, transitioning from a university-focused platform to a global social networking service.
Facebook's growth was not without controversy. Shortly after its launch, Zuckerberg faced allegations from fellow Harvard students Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, who claimed he had agreed to help them build a social network called HarvardConnection (later known as ConnectU) but instead used their ideas to develop a competing platform. This dispute led to a legal battle that was eventually settled.
Over the years, Facebook has transformed from a college networking site into one of the world's largest social media platforms, boasting nearly 3 billion monthly active users as of 2023. Its journey from a dorm room project to a global phenomenon underscores the profound impact of social networking on modern communication and society.
