EU Unveils €200 Billion Plan to Boost Artificial Intelligence Industry in Europe
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a significant initiative to mobilize €200 billion for artificial intelligence (AI) investments in Europe.
Speaking at the Paris AI Summit, she detailed that the European Union will contribute €50 billion, supplementing €150 billion already pledged by over 60 European companies under the European AI Champions Initiative.
The EU's €50 billion investment will be allocated to finance four AI "gigafactories" aimed at fostering open and collaborative development of advanced AI models. This funding will be sourced from existing programs with a digital focus.
Companies participating in the European AI Champions Initiative include industry leaders such as Airbus, ASML, Siemens, Infineon, Philips, Mistral, and Volkswagen. These firms have committed to advancing AI-related opportunities within Europe.
Von der Leyen emphasized Europe's ambition to become a leading continent in AI, advocating for a distinctive approach centered on collaborative, open-source solutions. She also highlighted the importance of balancing innovation with safety, defending the EU's regulatory framework for AI.
This strategic move underscores the EU's commitment to strengthening its position in the global AI landscape, aiming to foster innovation while ensuring ethical standards and safety.
