French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu has emphasized a pivotal moment for NATO as the United States and Russia initiate negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Speaking ahead of a NATO meeting, Lecornu stated, "It's a crucial moment of truth. People call it the most important, the strongest military alliance in history. That's historically true—but the question is, will it still be true 10 or 15 years from now." 

This statement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to begin negotiations to broker a ceasefire in Ukraine. Trump indicated that Ukraine is unlikely to regain all its territory or join NATO as part of the negotiations, a stance that has raised concerns among European allies about potential concessions to Russia. 

In response to these developments, Lecornu has called on European countries to continue their rearmament efforts, highlighting the need for tangible military contributions such as warplanes, warships, and troops, rather than solely focusing on defense spending as a percentage of GDP. He emphasized that "budget curves don't protect, deter and defend; real contributions do." 

The evolving geopolitical landscape underscores the necessity for NATO to adapt and reinforce its strategic objectives to maintain its position as a cornerstone of international security.
