Preparations Underway for 2025 Arab Summit in Baghdad: Iraq Seeks Regional Unity
Baghdad is intensifying preparations to host the 34th Arab Summit in May 2025, aiming to position itself as a regional platform for cooperation and addressing critical Arab issues.
Iraqi envoys are set to brief Arab leaders on the summit’s agenda, focusing on topics such as the Gaza crisis, Lebanon, and Syria, as well as fostering Arab unity against external pressures.
Diplomatic Outreach and Logistical Readiness
According to sources from Shafaq News Agency, Iraq is determined to make the summit a success, focusing on extensive logistical preparations, including accommodations for leaders and delegations, conference facilities, and a well-structured agenda. A committee from the Arab League, led by Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki, recently reviewed these arrangements, expressing satisfaction with Baghdad's efforts.
In the second phase of preparations, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is expected to deploy government representatives to Arab capitals. These envoys will discuss key issues on the summit agenda and rally support for rejecting proposals to deport Gaza residents, advocating instead for alternative solutions.
Summit’s Focus: Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon
The summit will center on urgent regional matters, including the future of Gaza’s residents, the situation in Lebanon, and Syria's internal challenges. Arab foreign ministers are scheduled to meet before the summit to finalize discussions on these topics, with particular attention on "New Damascus" initiatives and solutions for Gaza.
An Iraqi government source emphasized Baghdad’s commitment to preserving regional security and unity, noting that no Arab leader is expected to skip the summit due to the pressing nature of these issues and rising tensions, including threats from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Gaza.
Arab League's Endorsement of Baghdad
The Arab League approved Baghdad as the summit’s host following a request by Prime Minister al-Sudani during the 2023 Riyadh Summit. Iraq is hosting the event after Syria relinquished its turn, reflecting a regional consensus on Baghdad’s role in fostering Arab cooperation.
Al-Sudani described the summit as a significant opportunity to present Baghdad as a hub for Arab stability and development, reiterating Iraq’s dedication to supporting Arab causes and advancing regional collaboration.
Baghdad-Damascus Relations in the Spotlight
The summit is expected to influence Iraq’s future relationship with Syria, which has been marked by fluctuating dynamics since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. While Iraq has expressed interest in strengthening ties with Damascus, its current stance remains ambiguous. The invitation to Syria’s representatives at the summit could signal a shift in this relationship.
As preparations continue, the Baghdad Summit is poised to address key regional challenges while strengthening Iraq's diplomatic role in the Arab world.
