In a major step toward digital transformation, the Iraqi Council of Ministers has approved the establishment of the "National Mobile Phone Company", which will operate the country’s fifth-generation (5G) network in collaboration with Vodafone International Communications.

Government-backed 5G Initiative

According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the Ministry of Communications, the National Retirement Authority, and the Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI) will jointly contribute to the newly formed telecom company.

Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri’s Announcement

Speaking at a press conference, Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri emphasized that the initiative aligns with Iraq’s ministerial and government program, approved by Parliament, to modernize the telecommunications sector.

Al-Yasiri outlined key stakeholders in the National Mobile Phone Company, including:

Ministry of Communications (represented by Al-Salam General Company – the entity granted the 5G operating license)

Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI)

National Retirement Authority

The minister highlighted that the new telecom venture aims to:

Maximize revenues for the Employees' Retirement Fund

Provide affordable telecom services for retirees

Enhance Iraq’s digital infrastructure through 5G technology

Vodafone Partnership & Rapid Implementation

Al-Yasiri affirmed that technical preparations are underway in coordination with Vodafone International, following a memorandum of understanding signed with the global telecom giant. The ministry is also collaborating closely with the Communications and Media Commission (CMC) to ensure smooth implementation.

The minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the Council of Ministers, Parliament, and the CMC for their strong support in making this project a reality.

Fast-Track Rollout of Iraq’s 5G Network

Al-Yasiri concluded by stating: "We are moving forward with the implementation of this project as quickly as possible." The launch of Iraq’s first national 5G network is expected to revolutionize connectivity, boost economic growth, and position Iraq as a regional telecom leader.
