Turkish Parliament Receives Case to Lift Immunity of 11 MPs, Including DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakirhan
The case to lift the parliamentary immunity of 11 members of parliament, including The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-Chair Tuncer Bakirhan, has been sent to the Speaker of the Parliament.
The Turkish presidency continues to send cases involving the lifting of parliamentary immunity to the legislature, with 13 cases submitted so far.
Among those facing the lifting of immunity are DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakirhan, the DEM Party’s Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Gulistan Kilic Kocyigit, and CHP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Ali Mahir Basarir.
Of the 11 MPs involved, five are from the DEM Party, and four are from the CHP.
The Turkish parliament, consisting of 600 MPs, has received 833 immunity lifting cases during this parliamentary term, nearly all of which target opposition MPs, including those from the DEM Party and the CHP.
In the previous parliamentary term, more than 1,000 cases for lifting parliamentary immunity were sent to the Speaker of the Parliament.
