The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has demanded that the fate of over 8,000 detainees in Adra, Hama, and Harim prisons be revealed, stating that they have been held for over 100 days without trial or charges.

SOHR called on Syrian authorities to urgently reach an agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to allow an independent organization like the ICRC to monitor the conditions of detainees and ensure the rights of those without evidence of war crimes or murder.

SOHR emphasized that the role of the ICRC should extend beyond communication between detainees and their families to also include monitoring detention conditions and advocating for the release of those who have been unjustly held.

The continued detention of thousands without a fair trial reflects a continuation of the previous regime’s oppressive policies and constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law, SOHR stressed.

SOHR further stated that among the 8,000 detainees are soldiers returned from Iraq and fighters from the Syrian desert and Deir Ezzor villages, with growing concerns regarding their prolonged detention.

According to SOHR, the detainees also include former regime officers and employees who surrendered without resistance, as well as civilians detained during arbitrary operations or at military checkpoints.
