Kurdistan Region Asayish, Coalition Forces Conduct Operation Against ISIS Stronghold in Garmian Administration
Kurdistan Region Security (Asayish) forces, in coordination with Coalition Forces, launched an operation in areas of the Garmian Administration in Sulaymaniyah Governorate aimed at dismantling an ISIS stronghold.
The General Directorate of Asayish Operations announced in a statement that, in cooperation with Coalition Forces, Commando Forces, and Peshmerga units, the operation targeted the Zinana area and its surroundings on Saturday.
According to the directorate, the objective of the operation was to eliminate ISIS bases in the region and clear the area of militant presence.
ISIS fighters have been known to carry out periodic attacks in regions between the Iraqi Army and Peshmerga forces, where security gaps exist.
On November 17, 2024, a bomb planted in a convoy belonging to the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Brigade of the Peshmerga and Iraqi Army exploded in Tuz Khurmatu, resulting in the deaths of the battalion commander, an engineering officer from the 9th Division of the Iraqi Army, and one soldier, while three other soldiers sustained injuries.
Despite the Iraqi government's declaration of the end of ISIS in 2017, its sleeper cells remain active, continuing to launch occasional attacks against security forces and civilians.
