Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani paid tribute to the martyrs and victims of the Anfal genocide on its 37th anniversary, describing the campaign as a "great crime committed against the Kurdish people."

“On the 37th anniversary of the infamous Anfal campaign, we commemorate the martyrs and victims of the Anfal genocide,” Masrour Barzani said in a statement, adding that “tens of thousands of innocent Kurdish people were abducted to the deserts of southern and central Iraq, buried alive in mass graves, and made to disappear by the former Iraqi regime.”

“The Anfal genocide was a great crime committed against the Kurdish people, and the consequences of this massacre still exist,” Barzani emphasized.

He urged the federal government to fulfill its legal, constitutional, and moral responsibility to support the families of Anfal victims and provide compensation.

He also stated that the KRG reaffirms its commitment to serving the families of Anfal victims and Kurdistan’s martyrs.

 "Greetings to the pure souls of the martyrs of Kurdistan. May the memory of the martyrs and Anfal victims always be high and glorious,” Barzani concluded.

The Anfal campaign, executed by Saddam Hussein’s regime, led to the deaths of an estimated 180,000 Kurds through mass executions, chemical attacks, and the destruction of over 1,000 villages, all aimed at suppressing Kurdish resistance.
