Marvel Studios has officially rebranded its latest film, Thunderbolts, under a new title: The New Avengers. The surprise announcement came Monday via Marvel’s social media platforms, where a revised film poster bearing the new title was revealed.

The renaming, which aligns Thunderbolts more directly with Marvel’s billion-dollar Avengers franchise, is already being reflected in promotional materials at major movie chains such as AMC Theatres and ticketing platforms like Fandango.

Marvel shared a behind-the-scenes video of the cast peeling back the original Thunderbolts title on a poster to unveil The New Avengers beneath it during last week's Hollywood premiere. Another clip showed actor Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) replacing bus stop posters with the updated title.

Long-Rumored Reveal Confirmed

The change clarifies the meaning behind the asterisk in the film’s original title, which had sparked fan speculation for months. The film’s ending confirms that Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, U.S. Agent, and Sentry (Bob Reynolds) make up the new Avengers team, as announced by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in a key final scene.

Strategic Pivot After Opening Success

Though Thunderbolts opened strong with a $76 million domestic debut, the rebranding to The New Avengers is viewed as a strategic move to tap into the enormous brand power of the Avengers name, which has consistently delivered billion-dollar box office results for Disney and Marvel.

Industry analysts suggest that the name change may boost the film's second-weekend performance as general audiences realize the movie serves as the formal relaunch of the Avengers saga.

What’s Next for the Franchise

The New Avengers are expected to appear next in Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming in London and will also feature Sam Wilson/Captain America, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. The ensemble film is one of Marvel's most anticipated upcoming projects.

Over the weekend, actor Robert Downey Jr. – who stars as Doctor Doom in Doomsday – inadvertently confirmed the New Avengers branding in a now-deleted Instagram post referencing a screening of Thunderbolts with his co-stars.

Marvel has not released additional details about Avengers: Doomsday, but the bold rebranding of Thunderbolts signals a new era for the MCU as it prepares to integrate legacy characters with its next-generation heroes.
