In a statement on Monday, Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), welcomed the PKK’s decision to dissolve its organizational structure, end its armed struggle, and pursue a democratic political path based on the call of Abdullah Ocalan.

“We appreciate the PKK’s decision to resolve its organizational structure, end the armed struggle, and adopt a democratic approach,” Abdi said.

He acknowledged the PKK’s historical role in the region, adding that the group had played a significant part in the Middle East’s modern political and social landscape.

“We are confident this step will open the door to a new phase of politics and peace in the region,” Abdi stated.

He also called on all relevant actors to take constructive measures in support of the transition:

“We hope that all concerned parties will take meaningful steps and that everyone will offer the necessary support to ensure the success of this process.”

The statement comes amid growing regional attention on the implications of the PKK’s move to formally end its armed operations.
