Relatives and Lawyers Seek Access to PKK Leader Abdullah Ocalan in Imrali Prison
The relatives and legal representatives of jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan have submitted new requests to visit him in Imrali Prison, according to sources affiliated with Kurdish media.
Ocalan’s lawyer, Mazlum Dinc, has formally applied to the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Imrali Prison Administration seeking permission to meet with his client. The request was made alongside applications from the relatives of Ocalan and three other inmates currently held in the high-security prison.
Ocalan’s fellow inmates, Hamili Yildirim and Veysi Aktas, have also submitted requests through their families for visitation rights. In addition, the relatives of Ergin Atabay, Zeki Bayhan, and Mahmut Yamalak—three prisoners recently transferred to Imrali—have filed similar applications to the authorities.
Notably, Ocalan’s brothers, Omer Ocalan and Ali Ocalan, were permitted to visit him on June 7, the second day of Eid al-Adha—a rare occasion marking the first time in 26 years that Ocalan was allowed to see his two sons.
On the same day, the relatives of Omer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yildirim, Veysi Aktas, and other detainees also visited Imrali.
Between July 2015 and 2018, Ocalan and his legal team were barred from meeting under Turkey's state of emergency. Over the past eight years, visitation bans have been imposed 15 times on Ocalan and his lawyers.
On March 31, 2025, Mehmet Ocalan and Omer Ocalan visited the prison, along with the families of Ocalan’s fellow inmates.
Earlier, on October 23, 2024, Omer Ocalan also visited Imrali to meet his uncle.
On December 28, 2024, a political delegation comprising Pervin Buldan and Sirri Sureyya Onder made the first of several visits to the prison. They returned for a second visit on December 22, and a third on February 27, 2025, where they later read a statement from Ocalan in Istanbul.
The delegation, now including Feyik Ozgur Erol, visited again on April 21, 2025, and once more on May 18.
On June 26, 2025, Pervin Buldan stated that she intends to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, MHP leader Devlet Bahceli, and CHP leader Ozgur Ozel in the coming days, followed by another visit to Ocalan in Imrali.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Peoples' Party (DEM Party) and other organizations have called on the Turkish government to lift restrictions on Ocalan. They demand broader visitation rights, beyond family and lawyers, particularly for individuals Ocalan personally requests to see.
