Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that a Model Y SUV drove itself from the company’s factory near Austin directly to a customer’s home, marking Tesla’s first fully autonomous vehicle delivery.

In a post on X, Musk said the delivery took place “across town,” covering highways without anyone inside the car or remotely operating it. The vehicle reached speeds up to 72 miles per hour, according to Tesla’s head of AI and autopilot, Ashok Elluswamy.

Although Musk did not share video or images of the delivery, he promised footage would be released soon.

This milestone came a day earlier than Musk’s previously announced goal of June 28, which coincides with his 54th birthday. It underscores his broader vision of transitioning Tesla beyond an electric car manufacturer to a robotics and AI company.

Just days earlier, on June 22, Tesla launched its robotaxi service in Austin, offering rides in self-driving Model Y SUVs to a limited group of investors and influencers. Musk has repeatedly said Tesla aims to deploy millions of robotaxis in the future.

The autonomous delivery also builds on Tesla’s demonstration in April, when the company showed vehicles moving hands-free from its Texas production lines to logistics lots before shipping.

Despite these technological advances, Tesla continues to face challenges. Sales remain sluggish in North America and Europe, and the company is navigating executive departures and backlash related to Musk’s political affiliations.

It remains unclear if fully autonomous deliveries will become a standard part of Tesla’s operations. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
