Two Kurdish farmers from Shanagha village in Kirkuk are set to stand trial in Dubz court on Monday, amid ongoing disputes over land ownership in the province.
The farmers were previously released by court order, but the Court of Appeal later ruled that both must be sentenced, prompting the new hearing.
Mohammed Amin, a representative of Kurdish farmers in Kirkuk, told Channel8 that the complaints filed by Arab claimants are aimed at pressuring Kurdish farmers to abandon their land and villages.
Amin added that fully implementing the law on property restitution would resolve many of the farmers’ problems. However, he said a decision passed by the Iraqi parliament on the issue “has not been implemented and has been delayed.”
