Iraq Strikes Deals with Global Carmakers to Launch Local Vehicle Assembly Lines
The Iraqi Ministry of Trade announced agreements with major car manufacturers from Germany, China, and Brazil to establish automobile assembly lines inside Iraq.
Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Hanoun told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the initiative is being implemented in coordination with multinational companies under established technical and regulatory frameworks.
According to Hanoun, the project supports the government’s “Made in Iraq” vision by creating job opportunities for local workers and offering affordable, eco-friendly vehicles to the public.
Trade Minister Atheer al-Ghurairy and a delegation of officials recently visited several countries, where they reached accords with foreign companies to set up facilities in Baghdad and other provinces. Bilateral agreements have already been signed with the automakers, Hanoun confirmed.
Plans are underway to build assembly plants in southern Baghdad and additional locations across the country. Once operational, the initiative aims to boost Iraq’s industrial sector, expand employment, and eventually export vehicles once domestic demand is met.
The vehicles produced in Iraq will be modern, environmentally friendly, and designed to run on gas instead of gasoline. They will also be made available through affordable financing options, enabling low-income citizens to purchase them in installments with minimal interest.
