Apple Unveils iPhone 17 Lineup, Including Ultra-Thin ‘Air’ Model
Apple on Tuesday unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 17 family, headlined by the all-new iPhone Air, which the company says is the thinnest iPhone ever made.
The launch comes at Apple’s annual September event, branded this year with the tagline “Awe Dropping,” and sets the stage for the holiday shopping season.
Four New Models, Familiar Price Points
The lineup includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-slim iPhone Air. Despite speculation of higher costs, Apple largely held pricing steady compared with last year’s iPhone 16 series — a move analysts say reflects pressure from slowing global demand and rising competition.
- iPhone 17 starts at $799, now with 256 GB of storage (double last year’s base).
- iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099, $100 more than the 16 Pro, and the Pro Max at $1,199.
- iPhone Air starts at $999 and features a radical new design.
Preorders open September 12, with devices available from September 19.
The iPhone Air: Apple’s Thinnest Yet
At just 5.6 mm thick, the iPhone Air is about 28% thinner than the standard iPhone 16. It features a 6.5-inch ProMotion OLED display, a titanium frame, and upgraded “Ceramic Shield 2” glass for added durability.
The Air runs on the new A19 Pro chip and supports only eSIM — dropping physical SIM cards altogether. Its single 48-megapixel rear camera uses computational photography to mimic a four-lens system, while the 18 MP front camera supports Center Stage framing and dual-capture video.
The tradeoff is battery life: Apple says the Air offers “all-day performance,” but independent estimates suggest shorter endurance than Pro models.
Pro Models Push Performance
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max feature enhanced zoom cameras, 8K video recording, and vapor-chamber cooling to support Apple’s most advanced chip yet, the A19 Pro. The Pro Max includes a larger 5,000 mAh battery for extended use. Both models target creators and power users with dual-front-and-rear video capture, higher refresh displays, and improved thermal performance.
Color and Design Updates
Apple is leaning on design appeal to differentiate. The iPhone 17 will be available in black, lavender, mist blue, sage, and white, while the Air comes in space black, cloud white, light gold, and sky blue.
Tariffs and Market Pressures
The launch also comes against a backdrop of economic headwinds. Apple has absorbed nearly $800 million in tariff costs tied to U.S. trade policy under President Donald Trump, with forecasts suggesting that figure could reach $1.1 billion this quarter. Analysts say the decision to hold the line on pricing reflects Apple’s need to sustain market share without alienating cost-conscious buyers.
Ecosystem Refresh
Alongside the iPhone 17, Apple announced:
- AirPods Pro 3 ($249) with live translation, noise cancellation, and 8-hour battery life.
- Apple Watch SE 3 (from $249) and Series 11 with fitness and health upgrades.
- Apple Watch Ultra 3 ($799+) targeting athletes and outdoor users.
Looking Ahead
CEO Tim Cook, in a recorded presentation, called the iPhone Air a “game-changer,” promising “pro performance in an unbelievably thin and light design.” The company is betting that design innovation and ecosystem integration will help maintain its edge in an increasingly crowded smartphone market.
Whether the iPhone 17 lineup can replicate the sales momentum of its predecessors remains to be seen — but Apple is clearly aiming to balance performance, design, and affordability in what may be its most strategically calibrated launch in years.
