After More Than 6 Years of Isolation, Abdullah Ocalan’s Lawyers Allowed Visit on İmralı Island
End of a Long Isolation and Lawyers’ Meeting
After six years, one month, and seven days of isolation, lawyers of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), were granted permission to visit him on İmralı Island and hold a meeting.
This marks a significant step in breaking a prolonged period of solitary confinement.
A delegation from the Century Legal Office, consisting of lawyers Cengiz Yürekli, Raziye Öztürk, and İbrahim Bilmez, met with Ocalan. This visit ended the lengthy ban on lawyer meetings, which had been in place since August 7, 2019, when Rezan Sarıca and Newroz Uysal Aslan were the last lawyers to meet with him.
Efforts to Break the Isolation
In recent months, lawyers Özgür F. Eroğlu and Cengiz Çiçek, along with Ocalan’s relatives, repeatedly attempted to visit İmralı Island. Earlier, on October 23, 2024, after 43 months of restrictions and isolation, Abdullah Ocalan was permitted a family visit, when his nephew Ömer Ocalan met him in prison.
This came shortly after a call from Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the MHP (Nationalist Movement Party), who demanded that visits to Ocalan resume and that Ocalan be allowed to address the Turkish Parliament.
