Yazidis in Sinjar Showcase Traditional Attire to Preserve Cultural Heritage
The traditional garments of the Yazidi community were displayed during a cultural ceremony in Sinjar district, where organizers emphasized the importance of preserving their heritage for future generations.
The celebration featured songs and ceremonies that emphasized the history and identity of the community as a group of Yazidi boys and girls marched to The Sharfadin Temple while wearing authentic traditional attire.
The ceremony was organized by the “Servants of Lady Fakhran” group, which includes about 50 Yazidi youth. The group presented seven styles of ancient Yazidi clothing, representing regions such as Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Syria, Armenia, Welat Sheikh, and Sinjar.
Supervisor Bassam Jamil said the initiative aims to protect Yazidi cultural identity after centuries of persecution, noting that the community has survived 74 genocides throughout history. “Much of our heritage, especially traditional dress, is at risk of disappearing — this is our way of preserving it,” he said.
The event is held annually on October 3, which has been designated as “Yazidi Clothing Day”, to celebrate and safeguard the community’s cultural legacy.
