Mosul International Airport is set to reopen on November 1, with domestic flights operating initially.

According to the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has directed the start of operations at the airport while work continues to meet Civil Aviation Authority requirements for its operating license.

“The airport will be temporarily operated for domestic flights through self-managed efforts by the Airports Administration to operate flights across the province,” the office noted.

Plans for International Flights Underway

Under al-Sudani’s directives, the Ministry of Transport and Nineveh Governorate are finalizing talks with international companies to prepare the airport for international flights, serving travelers inside and outside Iraq.

Airport Closed for 11 Years

The Mosul International Airport was built in 1920 and covers an area of 1,600 acres. It has been closed for 11 years, and no flights have been carried out.

Renovation Efforts and Inauguration

On August 10, 2022, former Prime Minister Mustafa Kazemi laid the foundation stone for the renovation, which was decided in the 2021 budget bill and implemented by two French and Saudi companies.

On July 16, al-Sudani arrived in a private plane from Baghdad International Airport and opened the airport in a ceremony.
